Adventures in Grape Growing

When we moved, three and a-third years ago, I was sooooo excited about the existing grape vines and that fall we harvested a rediculous amount of grapes with which we made grape jelly.
I knew little about gardening at the time and less about growing fruit. I asked a knowledgable friend, "How should I prune the grape vines at my house?" She said, "About three feet from the main vine."
Sounded simple enough.
I pruned them...
The next year we didn't get any grapes. :(
Last year I didn't prune at all. :)
We got lots of little tiny grapes. : But we made some positively delicious grape jelly and grape juice.
I learned a few things. First, grape vines grow from second-year growth, which means you have to leave three feet of last year's producing vines, not three feet of the plant itself. My friend hadn't seen our grapes, so she didn't know that our vines were untrained and so was I.
This month my sister and I have been pruning the grapes with fear and trepedation. We are 95 percent positive we've done it right. :) The other five percent is because we may have pruned too early. If there is another big frost we are in trouble. Lord willing we'll be able to make grape jelly again in 2007. :D
